WiPM SIG News Brief - February 2006
SIG Updates

SIG Operations
So, while 2005 was a very successful year for us we expect 2006 to be event better.  In 2005, we were awarded the PMI Component of the Year Award (for SIGs with more than 1,000 members.) which was a significant accomplishment, as the competition was tough.  Our membership also increased significantly--we now have over 2500 members worldwide !  And, of course, the PMP eStudy program continued to be hugely successful--the last session was doubled in size to accommodate everyone who was interested.  In September at the PMP North American Congress, we celebrated our 10-year Anniversary to share our pride with our members and peer organizations who have helped us along the way.  In 2005, we raised our communications products and processes to a higher standard and we got a lot of positive feedback from our members on that effort.   So, in 2006 we definitely have our reputation and momentum that needs to be maintained--but we're up for the challenge!!

The Top Ten Keys to Making Projects Successful

The typical project manager has lots of responsibility and very little authority. To make things even more challenging, the typical project plan bears little resemblance to reality. Achieving successful outcomes under these conditions is not easy. Remember and apply these key reminders and you'll significantly increase your odds for success.

Who are the True Leaders in Project Management?
Declaring itself to be the 'foremost authority in project management', PMI published the names of 50 people it selected as 'The PMI Power 50' in the October 2005 edition of PM Network, and declared a hope that the list would “inspire spirited discussion around what a true leader in project management is, does, and achieves”. An Editorial by Hugh Woodward, President and Managing Editor of pmforum.org.

Extinguish Worker Burnout
Identifying employees on the verge of burning out and shaping a work environment that helps these non-performing employees refresh and motivate themselves is an invaluable managerial talent. Attitude changes, tardiness and productivity drops are all hints that a worker is nearing burnout, but there are several ways managers can intervene to get them back on track, an organizational consultant says. Start Singing - and Drive Safer
Exercising your pipes will help you stay alert and engaged.

Next time you’re behind the wheel and Sheryl Crow rocks your radio, sing along. Crooning might help you drive better—and possibly save your life. A survey of 1,780 drivers for a British car-insurance company found that listening to music may help reduce road rage and decrease the chance of an accident. Most respondents with good driving records said music relaxed them when driving and helped them stay alert.  Source: Health 2006

Caring for a Parent!

While people usually prepare for career, retirement, and the generation that follows, they do not anticipate caring for a parent.
