WiPM SIG News Brief - March 2007
SIG Updates

SIG Operations
SIG Events
- Hello and welcome to 2007. This year is proving to be another action packed year for the WiPM SIG. The Board kicked off 2007 with a SIG planning session on 12-14 Jan. It was an excellent session held in Detroit, Michigan (where two board members reside) with a LOT accomplished - the result was an updated Strategic Plan, a SWOT Analysis and an Operational Plan for 2007. We will be posting some of this material web soon.

Another topic discussed by the board was the next phase of the PMI virtual community transformation initiative, which will kick off this month at PMI GOC. As you may (or may not) know, the first phase of the transformation project dealt with the chapter structure and a pilot is current underway in Poland. Now several key virtual component leaders and representatives, including myself, have been selected to participate in the Virtual Communities Project which will help build our future community model.
- Rose Mary Tyler, PMP, WiPM SIG Chair

Remember that March is Women's History Month, and March 8 is International Women's Day! Did you know that international women's day has been celebrated for over 95 years? There are several other websites with lots of interesting information and downloads, history and timelines of significant events, biographies of notable women.

As you can see there is a LOT going on at the Board level. We are ALWAYS in search of volunteers…without them we won't get everything accomplished that we hope to. If you are interested in assisting us in any capacity please contact one of the Board Members. Their contact information is on the website.

Learn the Four Keys to the Science of Success
Every January, as we look ahead to the New Year, we think about our success - both personal and professional. We write down our resolutions, but what many of us fail to do is break down those resolutions and think about how we're going to make them happen. According to Michelle LaBrosse, PMP, Chief Cheetah, Cheetah Learning
, this "how" is the "Science of Success." It's the connective tissue that begins with vision and ends with gratitude. Here are the four keys to the Science of Success that Ms. LaBrosse has experienced at work and at home.

Bad Grammar May be Costing You the Job
According to a survey of 266 recruitment firms, job applications sent to employers are full of basic grammar and spelling mistakes. 47% of all CVs received by agencies contained mistakes, with applicants aged between 21 and 25 likely to be the most error prone. 70% of firms said that female applicants made fewer mistakes than men. Globalization - the Working Woman from 1970 until 2005

Tthere are “More women have participated in paid employment than any other time in history?”
The results is the entry of the working woman into the labor force which has resulted in many cases the expansion of economic opportunities available to women that has grown. (“Globalization, economic policy and employment: Poverty and gender implications” by James Heintz, March 2006)

Globalization of women’s employment, may be the single most important factor for keeping many households out of poverty. “Today many women have employment opportunities that would been closed to them a generation ago. Better education, smaller households, new opportunities and changing gender norms have been reduced, but certainly not eliminated.” (Ebit)

Today, women face higher unemployment rates than 10 years ago. In total 81.8 million women who are willing to work and actively looking for work are without a job. This means that there are 22.7 per cent more unemployed women than 10 years ago (ILO. "Global Employment Trends Brief” Geneva, January 2007)

Currently, 10 ‘FORTUNE 500’ companies are run by women (up from 9 in 2005), and a total of 20 ‘FORTUNE 1000’ companies have women in the top job (up from 19 in 2005). And in the UK it is estimated to take another 40 years to achieve an equal number of female directors in FTSE 100 companies. (“The Guardian, ‘In Norway, a woman’s place is in the boardroom", Monday January 9, 2006)
