WiPM SIG News Brief - March 2010
SIG Updates

Message from the Chair
In March we celebrate Women’s History month. During this month we celebrate Women’s contributions to events in history. This public celebration of women's history in the United States began in 1978 as "Women's History Week." In 1981, Senator Orrin Hatch and Representative Barbara Mikulski co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women's History Month. It is important to note, however, that the achievements of women are celebrated globally. International Women’s Day, March 8th, is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Interestingly, International Women’s day started as a Socialist political event. The holiday blended in the culture of many countries, (primarily Russia and the countries of former Soviet bloc). However, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

As I researched the origin of Women’s History Month and the many, many women cited for their significant contributions to their professions and countries, I thought of the countless women who contribute every day to the events in our world, to their families, professions, organizations and causes. There are so many of you who work on a daily basis, adding value in so many ways to all of these. During this month I encourage you all to reflect not only on the past, and the many women before us, but on the present, and celebrate the value of YOU. We may not have our names in the history books (YET), but each and every one of us every day contribute in some way to the history of women, adding value in our own special way. I applaud you all! Have a wonderful month.

Men Need Work-Life Balance Too
The WorkLifeFit Inc. article "Stop Talking About Work+Life Flex Solely in the Context of Women…Really, Seriously, Once and for All" makes an excellent point: Women do not have the greatest need for flexibility in work and life. Men need it too. Why depends on the individual, but another important piece of the article came in the form of a chart that outlined the organizational benefits that can manifest from workplace flexibility. They include: working better/smarter; more effective talent management, including retention and leadership development; improving client/customer service; containing and reducing costs; and improving environmental sustainability. The article also discussed how a predisposition to associate work-life balance with women can isolate men from weighing in on conversations about work-life strategies and inadvertently reinforce the “motherhood penalty."

The author rightly said, using research to back up the point, that there already exists a bias against mothers in the workplace: Don’t hire mom; she’s going to constantly take days off on kid-related emergencies. Tying work-life balance or workplace flexibility to women may perpetuate the notion “that mothers are the only ones who can’t make it work without extra accommodations.”

It’s like a blurb I saw on an elevator screen recently that said something like, “Men shouldn’t have to pay a lot of money to look good.” I think the subject matter was toiletries, and my first thought was: And women should pay a lot? We already pay too much!

What’s good for the goose is almost always good for the gander — whether it’s savings on soap or work-life flexibility.
