In March we celebrate Women’s
History month. During this month we celebrate Women’s contributions
to events in history. This public celebration of women's history
in the United States began in 1978 as "Women's History Week."
In 1981, Senator Orrin Hatch and Representative Barbara Mikulski
co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national
Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration
to a month, and March was declared Women's History Month. It is
important to note, however, that the achievements of women are
celebrated globally. International Women’s Day, March 8th, is
a major day of global celebration for the economic, political
and social achievements of women. Interestingly, International
Women’s day started as a Socialist political event. The holiday
blended in the culture of many countries, (primarily Russia and
the countries of former Soviet bloc). However, the political and
human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong,
and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide
are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.
As I researched the origin of Women’s History Month and the many,
many women cited for their significant contributions to their
professions and countries, I thought of the countless women who
contribute every day to the events in our world, to their families,
professions, organizations and causes. There are so many of you
who work on a daily basis, adding value in so many ways to all
of these. During this month I encourage you all to reflect not
only on the past, and the many women before us, but on the present,
and celebrate the value of YOU. We may not have our names in the
history books (YET), but each and every one of us every day contribute
in some way to the history of women, adding value in our own special
way. I applaud you all! Have a wonderful month.

Not
Just Knowledge: PMI’s Communities of Practice Are More than a
Place to Call Home
Learning, collaborating, taking advantage of great resources
specific to your interests. These are the benefits of
PMI’s communities of practice. But there is more to them than
that. Communities of practice are really communities.
PMI recently spoke with Etienne Wenger, PhD, communities of practice
researcher and author, social learning theorist
and recognized leader in the field. What follows is a summation
of his thoughts and insights about how communities of
practice can help you. Read
on.
