SIG
Updates
SIG
Operations
Thank
you to all the members, old and new, who stopped by our exhibit
tables at the PMI Great Lakes Symposium on
April 25 and the PMI Michigan Thumb Chapter Professional
Development Day on May 16. Sue Hardesty, our Director
of Membership, and I represented WiPM at the Great Lakes event
and I represented the SIG at the Thumb Chapter. Being an exhibitor
at local chapter events is a wonderful opportunity for not just
the Board, but our member volunteers, to "put a face" on the SIG
and interact live and in-person with one another. WiPM also participated
in the ProjectWorld Toronto event that was held 28-29 March.
Many thanks to board member Rosalee Kovalsky and member volunteers
Marla Kozak, Cindy Marcellus and Pat Crne for representing
WiPM at Toronto. WiPM is co-sponsoring PMI New York Chapter's
special event on June 7, "Inspiration Engineering - What
Your Mother Never Taught You About Leadership." Lee Lambert
is a great speaker and will definitely give you a good return
on your investment!
Last, but not least, the SIG board is in the initial planning
stages for the upcoming PMI North America Congress being held
in October in Atlanta. Unfortunately, we were not able to participate
in the recent EMEA Congress in Budapest. The Board is looking
at the feasibility of having a presence at the EMEA, Latin America
and Asia Pacific Congresses in the near future.
Until next time,

A
recent PMI® Project Management Journal (March 2007) article
references WiPM as the author's survey pool. This interesting
study focuses on leadership and managerial behaviors as perceived
and practiced by female project managers. View

PMI
CTP/Virtual Communities Project
- a member value assessment
survey was distributed to select PMI members in May. The feedback
provided by the survey is an essential element of the development
of future PMI communities. The Virtual Communities Project (VCP)
is the second phase of the larger PMI community transformation
initiative that kicked off in 2005; geographic communities were
addressed by the first phase and that new community (chapter)
model is currently being implemented.
Watch for ongoing updates on the VCP project in the PMI publications
and the Global Congresses. You
can read more about this initiative here.
April 2007 Component Statistics - WiPM SIG now holds
the rank of 4th largest PMI virtual community (of 30 SIGs total);
our membership count as of April stands at 3,045. The #1 SIG in
size is Information Services (ISSIG) which has 14,105; IT &
Telecom, PMO, and Consulting SIGs, along with WiPM and ISSIG make
up the top five largest virtual components.

Cross the Digital Divide and Get Where You’re Going
Faster
"Beyond socio-economic factors, there
is another digital divide that is perceptual. If you
have the access to technology, but you don't use it
to your advantage, you're throwing away your ticket
to the great digital concert. You're wasting an opportunity
that many people don't have and potentially affecting
your ability to succeed in the future. If you see yourself
as a digital disaster, it's not too late to learn and
take the digital dive.
Learn the five ways to take the digital dive."
Hit
the Road with the Woman Road Warrior
Businesswomen
now account for nearly 50% of America's business travelers.
"Like their male counterparts, 'woman road warriors'
open and close deals, make sales, give presentations,
attend or lead seminars, and maintain that all-important
in-person presence in the often impersonal corporate
world. Unlike most of those male counterparts, however,
woman road warriors often are simultaneously charged
with keeping their family on track at home - especially
their babies, toddlers and multitasking school-age children
- and nurturing them, even from long distance.
Business
travel is not filled with glamorous destinations where
all one does is shop, sightsee, or wine and dine in
fancy, expensive restaurants. On the contrary, business
travelers mostly go to different cities all over the
world, stay in “adequate” hotels, and hit the ground
running upon arrival. This doesn't mean going to museums,
shopping, and lunch, but to client meetings and working
dinners. Most of all, it means adhering to business
timelines and deadlines. Simply it requires a lot of
coordination, determination, and long hours.
The Woman
Road Warrior helps you take control of the process
of business travel by debunking myths and providing
concrete examples of on-the-road problem-solving."

Stereotypes?
When led to believe
that math-performance differences are
