SIG Updates

Message from the Chair
Congratulations and welcome to our new SIG board members:      Co-Chair/Andrea Giantelli, PMP
     Director-Communications/ Sandra LeBlanc, PMP
     Director-Finance/Megan Greve, CAPM and
     Director-Membership/Faban Marie Joyner, PMP

who bring us a lot of new energy and fresh perspective. Board member transition activities will occur over the next several weeks.

The EMEA Leadership Meeting on 5/15-17 in Amsterdam is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the worldwide project management community. PMI's global leaders collaborate with colleagues in various learning and sharing sessions, as well as build relationships through networking opportunities. Visit the PMI website for more on the PMI Leadership Institute.

PMI Virtual Communities Project continues toward its goal of migrating existing SIGs into the new virtual community organizational model. WIPM SIG is scheduled to begin formal transition in 1Q2010, however pre-work will start in 3Q/2009. Communications on this topic will also increase as we roll out details on some specific changes we will see-such as a new website presence with additional features such as blogs, discussion groups, etc.

On a related note, some of you may have encountered a virus message on our website. It has been reported and is still under investigation. It appears to be detected and removed by security such as McAfee, Spyware Doctor, Norton, etc. We apologize for any inconvenience and will continue to work towards a permanent resolution.

"Gender Roles and The Economy"

Excerpted from USA Today 3/26/2009 by Sharon Jayson
Institute experts suggest there’s a change in attitudes about gender roles, work and family, and it’s the men who are struggling more with the work-life balance. Women are contributing more to family income, according to a survey of 3,500 workers. Asked how much jobs and family life interfere with each other, 59% of fathers in dual-income families reported conflict in 2008, while just 35% did in 1977. For mothers, reported conflict increased from 40% to 45%.

"It does signal more equality of expectations — that men are no longer let off the hook," says Scott Coltrane, a sociologist at the University of Oregon.

"Better Safe Than Sorry"

by Dr. David Hillson, PMP HonFAPM

Dr. Hillson, who writes the Risk Doctor Briefing, says that "better safe than sorry" sounds like a good attitude to adopt in life and business as well as in projects but it can also lead to being overcautious and overprotective. The precautionary principle states that in any situation where there is a threat of severe or irreversible harm, and if there is no positive proof that harm would not result, then we should take protective action. Sometimes decisions made based on this principle result in unnecessary rules and regulations. But it is possible to be too safe, being overprotective and cautious, preventing ourselves from taking the risks that are associated with progress, innovation and success.

He recommends that project managers banish the precautionary principle from our projects, and use the risk process to ensure that we stay as safe as possible and have no reason to be sorry.

Did you Know?

Flex Hours
Sounds good, but maybe not so good. According to research        from University of Toronto, people who control their schedule        usually take more calls and send more email in the evening.        Setting strict limits for yourself—shutting down the PC and        Crackberry at 6 PM for example—will make it easier to call it a       day and lead to a more balanced life.

Natural Brain Booster
Being exposed to nature may improve your memory.        Researchers noticed that their study volunteers had better        recollection when they viewed photos of nature or walked in a        natural setting Vs, walking on city streets. Why? Because        nature captures our attention without requiring much thought.
